James Hollis also writes, “The moment we realize that our life is really in our own hands, that it is a spiritual summons to be honored, and that we deprive others by not bringing, our more developed selves to share, then we realize permission is not something given – but something to be seized.”
This concept can be, hopefully, empowering to you in thoughts on what to do next. Most of the time we are mired in the ‘here and now’ with many ropes that seem to tie us down to the current path. There are many influences on our thoughts about what is possible and what are the best ideas to pursue.
These influences will include strong ideas from your childhood with your parent’s perceived approvals or concepts on what life should be like. It may include religious teachings and laws that create certain expectations and limitations. It could include early childhood experiences on what worked or was accepted in your family or other families in your circle of friends. These early impressions are buried deep and part of your psyche that you should acknowledge and then decide how to manage in the current time.
Other influences that will be more current will include your adult friends, co-workers, religious teachings, and your immediate family. These ideas and suggestions will be at a higher level in your consciousness because they are newer and more fresh. They also might be more vocal in your day to day.
All of this is a reminder just for awareness. Understand that all of these ideas are going to be pulling at you consciously and subconsciously. With that backdrop, you are still the person in charge of what you do next. Keep the ‘voices’ in the background and allow yourself some time to reflect. Are there things you wanted to do and never had the opportunity? Are there new interests that you want to pursue?
Start your own business cutting hair?
Travel the world as a flight attendant?
Go back to college for another degree?
Move to a new geographic spot?
Be a teacher?
Etc.
Seize the opportunity you have to do something that you have wanted to do or wanted to try. Whether a job transition is voluntary or involuntary, it presents a chance to try something different. While it may bring stress, uncertainty, and confusion, it also offers the opportunity for self-reflection, courage, and the possibility of taking new risks.
